Liberal Studies, Emphasis in Education-Generalist, B.A. in Applied Arts and Sciences

Preparation for the Major

(10 units)

The emphasis in education-generalist is open only to students who have completed the California Community College Associate in Arts in Elementary Teacher Education (AA-T) degree and completed the Transfer Model Curriculum (TMC) for liberal studies/integrated teacher education.¹ Additional preparation for the major:

• ENS 241A - Physical Education of Children-Theory Units: 1 (complete with a grade of C (2.0) or better) may not be taken for credit/no credit (Cr/NC)
• ENS 241B - Physical Education of Children-Activities Units: 1 (complete with a grade of C (2.0) or better) may not be taken for credit/no credit (Cr/NC)
• MATH 211 - Geometry in Elementary Mathematics Units: 3 (complete with a grade of C (2.0) or better) may not be taken for credit/no credit (Cr/NC)
• MTHED 212 - Children’s Mathematical Thinking Units: 1-2
• MUSIC 102 - Music for Elementary Classroom Teachers Units: 3

Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement

Students must have fulfilled the Writing Placement Assessment with a score of 8 or above or with a grade of C (2.0) or better in RWS 280  or RWS 281  [or LING 281 ] before taking ENGL 306W  and earn a grade of C (2.0) or better. International Experience

All liberal studies majors are required to complete the international experience requirement.

No Option is required. (44.5-50 units)

¹ The statewide TMC in liberal studies includes courses equivalent to the Lower Division Core completed by students in the Elementary Education, Mathematics, and Science emphases with the following distinctions: a) courses equivalent to MUSIC 151  and THEA 100  are additional choices for the II.C.2. Visual and Performing Arts requirement and b) a fourth General Education Humanities philosophy, religious studies, or language other than English course is not required. The foci for the Education-Generalist emphasis does not include a breadth requirement for CHEM 308  or N SCI 100  because this requirement is part of the TMC.
