Liberal Studies, Emphasis in Science, B.A. in Applied Arts and Sciences

All candidates for a degree in applied arts and sciences must complete the graduation requirements listed in the section of this catalog on “Graduation Requirements .”

Completion of the liberal studies major fulfills General Education requirements.

A minor is not required for this major.

Emphasis in Science


Preparation for the Major


(56 units)

Complete 43 units of lower division core plus the courses listed below. These courses must be completed with a grade of C (2.0) or better and may not be taken for credit/no credit (Cr/NC).

Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement


Students must have fulfilled the Writing Placement Assessment with a score of 8 or above or with a grade of C (2.0) or better in RWS 280  or RWS 281  [or LING 281 ] before taking ENGL 306W  and earn a grade of C (2.0) or better. See “Graduation Requirements ” section for a complete listing of requirements.

International Experience Requirement


In recognition of the increasing globalization in all sectors of world society, the Liberal Studies International Experience has been established. Students participate in designated, pre-approved study abroad experiences in a different country. Options include a variety of short term and semester formats designed to meet the needs of different students, including those with family and work responsibilities. The purpose of the experience is to increase student awareness of cross-cultural and global issues - issues that are critical to their development as future teachers and citizens in a complex, rapidly changing world. All liberal studies majors are required to participate in an international experience approved by the program director.

To meet the international experience requirement, majors must complete one of the following:

  1. A CSU Study Abroad Program;
  2. An SDSU Exchange Program;
  3. An SDSU Study Abroad Program;
  4. An SDSU Study Travel Program;

2 Students must pass the Liberal Studies Mathematics Proficiency Assessment prior to enrolling in MATH 312  and MATH 313 .

3 Verify with a liberal studies adviser.

4 Required for Foundational Level General Science certification. A portfolio assessment is also required. See science adviser.
