(Academic Plan Code: 416A00GTCS) (Academic Plan Code: 416A00GTCI)
This program is open to all teachers who hold a preliminary or clear California credential for multiple or single subject teaching and are interested in adding a bilingual added authorization (BAA).
- The courses listed here focus on Spanish. For those interested in adding other languages such as Arabic, Japanese, Mandarin, or Pilipino (national version of Tagalog), contact the DLE department at dle@sdsu.edu or 619/594-5155 for details on pathways for these languages.
- Up to nine units of graduate-level coursework in this added authorization may be applied (with prior approval) toward the Master of Arts in dual language and English learner education.
More information can be found on the BAA (Bilingual Added Authorization) webpage.
Standards for Admission
- Completion of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
- California Multiple or Single Subject Teaching Credential or equivalent.
- Proficiency in a language other than English. Candidates applying to the BAA are required to provide one essay and video in English and the other in the language of emphasis. See application for specific directions.
- 20 or more hours of field experience in a bilingual classroom (can be completed concurrently with program). See details under “experience requirement.”
*If you don’t meet the above criteria yet, please consult the DLE Department about possible conditional admission.
Department vs. University Admission.
Note that departmental admission to the added authorization does not constitute admission to the university. Candidates who have completed their credential program and are planning to re-enroll for the added authorization (or who are entering the university for the first time) must file for admission to the university during the regular university application period.
Evaluation of Credits
After an interval of five years, courses in education are reevaluated and subject to reduction in credit in light of new requirements and changes in educational procedures. All courses taken either at this university or elsewhere must be approved by an official adviser in order to be credited toward meeting credential requirements for a degree.
Bilingual Added Authorization Requirements
- Core requirements for the bilingual added authorization may be met via coursework, examination or a combination of both. Equivalencies are provided in the following table.
CSET: LOTE subtest

- To be eligible for the authorization, students must maintain a B average (3.0) in the courses they are using toward the authorization, with no grade below a C (2.0).
- Experience Requirement. Candidates must complete 20+ hours of experience in a bilingual classroom. Candidates who have recent experience in Spanish language, dual immersion, and/or bilingual education settings may consult with the advisor about the possibility of substituting some or all of this requirement. Otherwise, these field experience hours may be completed in DLE 515 as part of the BAA and/or by taking DLE 416L (1 unit). Substitutions are subject to documentation, review by the advisor and approval by the credential analyst.
Once these criteria are met, candidates file for the authorization and pay the associated fee.
