Admission to the Degree Curriculum
Applicants must satisfy the general requirements for admission to the university with classified graduate standing, as described in Admission and Registration. This fully online MAT is designed for individuals with a teaching credential as this program of study does not culminate in the earning of a teaching credential, though applicants wishing to participate in this program who have not completed a teaching credential may still apply to the program by providing evidence of teaching knowledge and experience with a rationale that establishes that this program meets professional or personal goals. An applicant may submit six units of adviser-approved post-baccalaureate teacher credential work from an accredited institution to the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree for review by Graduate Studies, and if approved will be applied towards the program of requirement of 30 units. It is recommended that the coursework for the MAT begin within four years of completion of the basic teacher credential program. In order to be awarded credit of a maximum of six post-baccalaureate credential units in the MAT, these units, along with the course of study units, cannot be more than six years old at the time of completion of the MAT. Applicants without post-baccalaureate teacher credential coursework within this timeframe from an accredited institution will complete six units approved by the adviser.
Advancement to Candidacy
All students must satisfy the general requirements for advancement to candidacy as described in Requirements for Master’s Degrees.
Specific Requirements
All candidates for the MAT will be required to take a comprehensive examination that will satisfy the culminating experience Plan B requirement. This written examination is designed to evaluate achievement in the specific area of the student’s concentration. A student is eligible to take the comprehensive examination only after advancement to candidacy.
Master of Arts in Teaching Degree (Fully Online)
This fully online Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is designed to provide master’s level professional development as part of a teacher development continuum for K-12 teachers. The goal is to increase teachers’ expertise in curriculum and instruction in order to ensure learning and achievement for students from diverse populations. Up to six units from credential or other graduate program may count as electives in this program. The degree has two concentrations from which teachers can select, depending on their interests and educational backgrounds. The two concentrations include Elementary Education and Secondary Education. Students select courses in collaboration with the graduate adviser.
