Undergraduate Information

The Major

The importance of understanding the governments and political structures of Russia and Central Europe is readily apparent by observing the role they play in current events. In addition, their rich cultures and traditions are subjects of great value. The Russians and Central Europeans have made significant contributions to the world’s literature, arts, and sciences. For students who wish to deepen their understanding of this part of the world within a broad framework, SDSU’s major in Russian and Central European studies may be an appropriate choice.

Our mission is to provide and support the acquisition of linguistic and cultural proficiency in Russian and develop students’ appreciation for diversity through the study of Russia in its European and global contexts. We provide opportunities to study abroad to strengthen students’ language literacy and prepare them for professional careers at home and abroad. Since many of our students further pursue education in various disciplines, e.g., law, history, MBA, Slavic Studies, our major prepares them to develop critical and analytical skills and articulate their arguments eloquently in spoken and written forms. In keeping with SDSU College of Arts and Letters’ mission, the vision for the Russian program calls for our students to become culturally sensitive, socially engaged, and globally informed citizens. Finally, we strive to provide outreach service to businesses, professional communities, and the general public in the San Diego area.

Advising

All College of Arts and Letters majors are urged to consult with their department adviser as soon as possible; they are required to meet with their department adviser within the first two semesters after declaration or change of major.

Graduate Information

General Information

The Department of European Studies offers coursework in Russian which may be used toward fulfilling advanced degree requirements in Interdisciplinary Studies and other departments with the approval of the student’s graduate adviser.
