General information

The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers graduate study leading to the Master of Science degree in mechanical engineering. Additional details about the program may be obtained from the Mechanical Engineering Department’s website at https://mechanical.sdsu.edu/graduate/msme_degree.

The program provides opportunities for the students to gain expertise in areas like energy, thermofluids, materials, mechanics, design, manufacturing, robotics, dynamics and control, and computational methods. Students are expected to develop a plan of study that shows depth in one of these areas as well as breadth across related areas in mechanical engineering.

Specific Requirements for the Degree


Completion of 30 units of 500-, 600-, and 700-level courses and one of two options: Thesis (Plan A) or Non-Thesis (Plan B). The total number of units from 500-level courses should not exceed 9. The student’s program prepared in conference with and approved by the Graduate Adviser, must satisfy the following requirements:

  • Units: 1-3 (taken for 3 units)
  • Six units of 600- or 700-level courses from mechanical engineering.
