International Security and Conflict Resolution, Specialization in Environment in the Global System, B.A. in Liberal Arts and Sciences

All candidates for a degree in liberal arts and sciences must complete the graduation requirements listed in the section of this catalog on “Graduation Requirements .”

A minor is not required with this major.

International security and conflict resolution majors may wish to obtain language certification in a language other than English. Many career positions related to an international security and conflict resolution major will require demonstrated competency in a language other than English.

It is also recommended that international security and conflict resolution majors consider a minor in an area studies program, e.g., African Studies, Asian Studies, European Studies, Islamic and Arabic Studies, or Latin American Studies. Many career positions related to an international security and conflict resolution major will require a strong background in a particular region and/or culture. The program also requires at least one preapproved study abroad experience.

Impacted Program

The international security and conflict resolution (ISCOR) major is an impacted program. To be admitted to the international security and conflict resolution (ISCOR) major, students must meet the following criteria:

  1. Complete preparation for the major;
  2. Complete a minimum of 60 transferable semester units;
  3. Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.

To complete the major, students must fulfill the degree requirements for the major described in the catalog in effect at the time they are accepted into the premajor at SDSU (assuming continuous enrollment).

Study Abroad Requirement


All ISCOR majors are required to complete an international experience to increase student awareness of cross-cultural and global issues. This requirement can be fulfilled in a number of ways to meet the needs of different students, including those with family and work responsibilities. Options include, but are not limited to, three-week faculty-led programs, semester and year-long study abroad programs, international internships, service and research experiences, and virtual options. Among the approved options are the ISCOR 450  courses, which are generally faculty-led programs of three-to-six weeks. Also acceptable, conditional upon the approval of the ISCOR adviser, are 450 courses offered by other departments. For all other options, you need the pre-approved consent of the undergraduate adviser.

Preparation for the Major


(15 units)

All ISCOR majors are required to include ISCOR 200  as part of their pre-major units.

Language Requirement


A minimum competency (successfully completing the third college semester or fifth college quarter) is required in one language other than English to fulfill the graduation requirement (excluding American Sign Language). Refer to section of catalog on “Graduation Requirements .”

Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement


Completing one of the approved upper division writing courses (W) with a grade of C (2.0) or better. See “Graduation Requirements ” section for a complete listing of requirements.

Major


A minimum of 36 upper division units to include 15 units from the following. Students may substitute a 500-level course in any department for either ISCOR 495  or ISCOR 497 .

Specialization in Environment in the Global System


Issues related to the environment and the utilization of energy and natural resources are important aspects of international security and often are related to cooperation and conflict between nations and groups within states. The purpose of this specialization is to provide the student with the necessary background to better understand this aspect of international security and the management and resolution of conflict.

Requirements for Specialization


ISCOR 450 + can be substituted for a maximum of one three unit course in this specialization with the approval and written consent of the undergraduate adviser.
