The M.A. degree of Critical Studies in Music is an interdisciplinary program designed to explore the historical, cultural, and theoretical aspects of music as an integral part of the human experience. After receiving training in research principles and techniques, students in the program will work with faculty to develop an individual research project that will culminate in an original thesis and presentation. Students who graduate with an M.A. in Critical Studies from SDSU will be prepared either to teach academic music courses at the community college level or to apply for Ph.D. programs at high-ranking institutions.
Applicants are required to submit scholarly writing samples that demonstrate advanced skills in research, critical thinking, and writing. An undergraduate music degree is recommended, but not required. Previous coursework should demonstrate an aptitude for critical thinking.
