Specific Requirements

In addition to meeting the requirements for classified graduate standing and the basic requirements for the master’s degree as described in Requirements for Master’s Degrees , the student must complete an approved graduate program of at least 30 units to include

• SPAN 601 - Seminar in Hispanic Literary Theory Units: 3
• SPAN 602 - Foundations and Research Methods of Hispanic Linguistics Units: 3
• SPAN 661 - Issues in the Study of Spanish Bilingualism Units: 3
• SPAN 770 - Applied Spanish Linguistics for Teachers Units: 3

Students May Elect Either

Students may elect either Plan A, Thesis; or Plan B, Comprehensive Examination to meet the culminating experience requirement for the Master of Arts degree in Spanish.

Portuguese

All candidates must demonstrate knowledge of Portuguese by passing an examination administered by the department or by completing

• PORT 101 - Elementary Portuguese I Units: 5

• or

• PORT 201 but not both.
