The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering offers graduate study leading to the Master of Science degree in computer engineering. The program seeks to provide students with core knowledge through graduate courses offered in three focus areas of computer networks, embedded systems, and very large-scale integration (VLSI) systems.

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements for admission to the Master of Science degree in computer engineering program:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, or closely related areas with a grade point average of 3.0 or better for international students and a minimum grade point average of 2.85 for domestic students, based on 4.0 scale;
  2. A minimum TOEFL score of 85 or a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 for international students;

(9 units)

NOTE: Courses listed under more than one focus area can only be counted once upon completion towards the degree.

3. Culminating Experience

(6 units)

Students select one of two plans of study; however, those students who express a desire to pursue doctoral studies are encouraged to choose Plan A (thesis). Students select a faculty member in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering who is willing to serve as thesis/project adviser. The adviser is responsible for supervising the student’s work and selecting the committee.

Plan A students present their thesis work before the thesis committee. The committee shall consist of the thesis adviser who serves as committee chair and two additional faculty members, one from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and one from another department at San Diego State University. Approval of the thesis by the committee is required.

Plan B students present their project before the project committee and complete a project report. The project committee shall consist of the project adviser who serves as chair, and one additional faculty member from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Approval of the project by the committee is required.
