In addition to meeting the requirements for classified graduate standing, the student must meet the basic requirements for the master’s degree as described in Graduation Requirements for the Bachelor’s Degree and complete 31 units of coursework approved by the graduate adviser.

Advancement to Candidacy
All students must satisfy the general requirements for advancement to candidacy as described in Requirements for Master’s Degrees . In addition, the student must have passed a qualifying examination in some programs.
Undergraduate Preparation for Admission
Before entering the program, students must complete the following upper division courses:
Two Courses in Analysis
To include
Two Courses in Differential Equations
One Course in Programming or Numerical Analysis
One Course in Linear Algebra
Students with Inadequate Undergraduate Preparation
A student with inadequate undergraduate preparation may be accepted conditionally but will be required to complete courses for the removal of the deficiency in the first year of study; among these courses, at most one of MATH 531 and MATH 537 can count towards the degree course requirements.
Program of Study
Program of study, to include a plan for removal of any conditions on admission, must be approved by the program adviser. Students must complete MATH 636 ; MATH 630 or MATH 668 ; MATH 693A or MATH 693B ; MATH 720 (1 unit), MATH 797 (3 units), MATH 799A , and 15 units of 500- or 600-level courses in mathematics or in a related discipline selected with the approval of the program adviser. The program of study must include at least 22 units in mathematics or statistics, and at most 12 units of 500-level courses. Math 798 may not be counted toward the degree program without permission of the graduate adviser. Students must select Plan A (Thesis) and give a public oral defense of the thesis. A thesis normally takes one year to complete and is done under the direction of a thesis adviser.
