In addition to meeting the requirements for classified graduate standing and the basic requirements for the master’s degree as described in Requirements for Master’s Degrees , the student must meet the following requirements:
- Before entering the program, students should have completed the following courses or equivalents: Mathematics 521A, MATH 524 , MATH 530 , MATH 532 . Students who have not completed these courses before entering the program may be admitted conditionally.
- Complete the 18-unit core course curriculum: MATH 620 , MATH 630 ; MATH 621 or MATH 625 or MATH 626 ; MATH 633 or MATH 668 ; MATH 797 , MATH 799A .
- Complete 12 additional units of approved 500- and 600-level courses, at least six units must be in mathematics excluding MATH 600 , MATH 601 , MATH 602 ; maximum nine units at the 500-level.
- Students must select Plan A (Thesis) and give a public oral defense of the thesis. A thesis normally takes one year to complete and is done under the direction of a thesis adviser.

Advancement to Candidacy
All students must satisfy the general requirements for advancement to candidacy as described in Requirements for Master’s Degrees . In addition, the student must have passed a qualifying examination in some programs.
