In addition to meeting the requirements for classified graduate standing and the basic requirements for the master’s degree as described inRequirements for Master’s Degrees , the student must complete a graduate program of at least 30 units which includes a major consisting of at least 24 units in French, of which at least 18 units must be in 600- and 700-numbered courses in French, including FRENC 799A - Thesis , for those following Plan A or FRENC 798 Special Study  for those following Plan B.

Students, with the consent of the graduate adviser, may elect Plan A, which includes FRENC 799A - Thesis  (minimum GPA 3.6), or Plan B, which includes FRENC 798 Special Study  and written and oral examinations in lieu of the thesis.

Advancement to Candidacy


All students will be required to pass a qualifying examination in French given by the Department of European Studies. This examination will also satisfy the language other than English requirement as stated in Requirements for Master’s Degrees .

Note


Students are required to take 18 units in 600- and 700-numbered courses in French, including either FRENC 799A Thesis  for Plan A or FRENC 798 798  for Plan B. Related graduate level courses in other departments may be taken for a total of six units credit with prior approval of the graduate adviser.
