Africana Studies, B.A. in Liberal Arts and Sciences

All candidates for the degree in liberal arts and sciences must complete the graduation requirements listed in the section of this catalog on “Graduation Requirements .” No more than 48 units in Africana studies courses can apply to the degree.

A minor is not required with this major.

Impacted Program

The Africana studies major is an impacted program. To be admitted to the Africana studies major, students must meet the following criteria:

  1. Complete preparation for the major;
  2. Complete a minimum of 60 transferable semester units;
  3. Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.

To complete the major, students must fulfill the degree requirements for the major described in the catalog in effect at the time they are accepted into the premajor at SDSU (assuming continuous enrollment).

Language Requirement


Competency (successfully completing the third college semester or fifth college quarter) is required in one language other than English to fulfill the graduation requirement. Refer to section of catalog on “Graduation Requirements .”

Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement


Passing the Writing Placement Assessment with a score of 10 or completing one of the approved upper division writing courses (W) with a grade of C (2.0) or better. See “Graduation Requirements ” section for a complete listing of requirements.

Study Abroad Requirement


Majors specializing in African Studies or Diaspora Studies are required to complete a minimum of three units of study abroad experience in Africa or in the Black diaspora (excluding the United States). To meet this requirement, majors must have the study abroad experience approved with written consent of the undergraduate adviser and department chair.

Major


A minimum of 27 upper division units to include

12 Units Selected from One of the Following Areas


12 units selected from one of the following areas; three units from each of the remaining two areas. Up to six units, with appropriate content, of 496 and 499 in any combination may be applied to an area of specialization with the approval of the department chair. With the exception of AFRAS 485 , no course may be used to satisfy more than one area of specialization.
