In preparation for the Single Subject Teaching Credential in Foreign Languages

All candidates for a teaching credential must complete all requirements as outlined in this section of the catalog under Dual Language and English Learner Education or Teacher Education. For students completing the single subject teaching credential program, no more than 48 units in Russian courses can apply to the degree.

This major may be used by students in dual language and English learner education or teacher education as an undergraduate major for the B.A. degree in liberal arts and sciences. A minor in another field approved by the departmental adviser in Russian is required for the degree.

Language Requirement

The language requirement for graduation is automatically fulfilled through coursework for preparation for the major.

Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement

Passing the Writing Placement Assessment with a score of 10 or completing one of the approved upper division writing courses (W) with a grade of C (2.0) or better. See “Graduation Requirements ” section for a complete listing of requirements.

RUSSN 303 - Russian for Business Communication Units: 3
RUSSN 305A - Heroes and Villains: Russian Literature of the Nineteenth Century Units: 3
RUSSN 305B - Russian Literature of the Twentieth Century Units: 3
RUSSN 430 - Russian Civilization Units: 3
RUSSN 501 - Translation Units: 3
Six units in 400- or 500-level courses in Russian

Proficiency Examination

Before taking a student teaching assignment in Russian, the candidate for the credential may be required to pass an oral and written proficiency examination in the language, administered by the Department of European Studies. The candidate must consult with the chair of the department concerning this examination.

Language Requirement for the B.A. Degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences

Students electing the study of Russian to fulfill the language requirement for the Bachelor of Arts degree in liberal arts and sciences must successfully complete RUSSN 200A or the equivalent level of achievement. Refer to section of catalog on “Graduation Requirements ” for additional ways to satisfy competency.

The usual sequence of coursework is

RUSSN 100B - Beginning Russian 2 Units: 5
RUSSN 200A - Intermediate Russian 1 Units: 5

High School Equivalents

High school foreign language courses may be used for purposes of placement in college courses and may be counted toward meeting the language requirement in various majors. These high school courses will not count as college credit toward graduation.

Secondary school language courses can be used as follows:

The first two years of high school level language count as the equivalent of the first semester of a college level course.
The first three years of high school level language count as the equivalent of the first two college semesters.
Four years of high school level language count as the equivalent of three college semesters or five college quarters, thus fulfilling the language requirement.
