Language Requirement

Competency (successfully completing the third college semester or fifth college quarter) is required in one foreign language to fulfill the graduation requirement. Refer to section of catalog on “Graduation Requirements .”

Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement

Passing the Writing Placement Assessment with a score of 10 or completing one of the approved upper division writing courses (W) with a grade of C (2.0) or better. See “Graduation Requirements ” section for a complete listing of requirements.

Study Abroad Requirement

Majors specializing in African Studies or Diaspora Studies are required to complete a minimum of three units of study abroad experience in Africa or in the Black diaspora (excluding the United States). To meet this requirement, majors must have the study abroad experience approved with written consent of the undergraduate adviser and department chair.

Up to six units, with appropriate content, of 496 and 499 in any combination may be applied to an area of specialization with the approval of the department chair. With the exception of AFRAS 485 , no course may be used to satisfy more than one area of specialization.
