(Major Code: 17031) (Academic Plan Code: 776314MSS)

Program of Study

Program of study, to include a plan for removal of any conditions on admission, must be approved by the program adviser. The program of study must include at least 22 units in mathematics or statistics, and at most 12 units of 500-level courses. 31 units are required for the M.S. in Applied Mathematics. MATH 798  may not be counted toward the degree program without permission of the graduate adviser.

Students must select Plan A (Thesis) or Plan B (Portfolio). If they choose Plan A they must give a public oral defense of the thesis. A thesis normally takes one year to complete and is done under the direction of a thesis adviser. If they choose Plan B, they must develop a digital portfolio summarizing work they have completed and subjects they have mastered during their graduate studies. They must also give a presentation describing the contents of their portfolio. If a student first chooses Plan A (by enrolling in MATH 797 ) and then changes to Plan B by enrolling in MATH 699, they must take another 500- or 600- level course in mathematics or in a related discipline.

In addition to meeting the requirements for classified graduate standing, the student must meet the basic requirements for the master’s degree as described in Graduation Requirements for the Bachelor’s Degree  and complete 31 units of coursework approved by the graduate adviser.

Advancement to Candidacy

All students must satisfy the general requirements for advancement to candidacy as described in Requirements for Master’s Degrees . In addition, the student must have passed a qualifying examination in some programs.

Undergraduate Preparation for Admission

Before entering the program, students must complete the following upper division courses:

Two Courses in Analysis

To include

One Course in Programming or Numerical Analysis

One Course in Linear Algebra

Students with Inadequate Undergraduate Preparation

A student with inadequate undergraduate preparation may be accepted conditionally but will be required to complete courses for the removal of the deficiency in the first year of study; among these courses, at most one of MATH 531  and MATH 537  can count towards the degree course requirements.

Plan A (Thesis)

(6 units)

Plan B (Portfolio)

(6 units)

  • Units: 3
