General Information

San Diego State University provides preparation for biostatistically oriented careers by offering biostatistics related coursework, research opportunities and biostatistical consulting experience within regular degree programs in the Departments of Biology, Mathematics and Statistics, and the School of Public Health. A Master of Science degree in statistics with concentration in biostatistics may be earned in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics; and a Master of Public Health degree with concentration in biometry may be earned in the School of Public Health. Degrees in general biostatistics or biometry are not offered by the university. However, a Master of Science degree in biostatistics or biometry may be earned in Interdisciplinary Studies (see the appropriate section in this bulletin).

Specific courses in biostatistics and biometry (listed below) are offered with the cooperation of faculty from the participating departments. Biostatistics and biometry courses that specialize in applications to biology are offered in the Department of Biology; similarly, courses that specialize in applications to public health are offered in the School of Public Health. Courses that cover a variety of areas of application (including biology and public health) are offered by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. In addition to these applied courses, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers some courses in statistics and biostatistics that are more mathematically oriented.
