Program Description
The Asian American Studies (AAS) program provides an interdisciplinary and rigorous liberal arts education. The program offers a Bachelor of Arts major and a Minor in Asian American Studies. These programs are designed to develop the crucial skills that employers are seeking: critical analysis, writing, communication, and reasoning and leadership in the workplace. The coursework teaches students the histories, politics, arts, and cultures of Asian Americans in the United States.
Employment opportunities for Asian American Studies majors include positions in university student life, nonprofit organizations, city, county, state, and federal governments, small businesses, large corporations, and with advanced degrees careers in health, social work, counseling, and law.
Program Mission
The mission of the Asian American Studies program is to immerse students in the multiple cultures and histories that comprise Asian America while also preparing students for the workforce. Students will be trained in self-empowerment skills and the skills needed to create a more inclusive and equitable society. Asian American Studies students will achieve these skills by taking interdisciplinary courses as well as courses in the humanities, social sciences, applied humanities and applied social sciences. The program strives to maintain a commitment to activism and to the needs of our local communities.
Advising
All College of Arts and Letters majors are urged to consult with their department adviser as soon as possible; students are required to meet with their department adviser within the first two semesters after declaration or change of major.
Major Academic Plans (MAPs)
Visit http://www.sdsu.edu/mymap for the recommended courses needed to fulfill your major requirements. The MAPs website was created to help students navigate the course requirements for their majors and to identify which General Education course will also fulfill a major preparation course requirement.
